Evangelists

My grandfather put together a collection of his poems and jingles back in 1976. He self published the little book and gave it to all his friends and family. He wrote constantly. I have boxes and boxes of his writings. Some poems are scribbled on cocktail napkins, newspaper crossword puzzles, whatever he had handy. For the next few posts I will be sharing some of them with all of you. Enjoy!

Evangelists

I guess I'm not an ordinary male.
Religiously I am beyond the pale.
I don't like religious teaching
That ends up in beseeching
Pontificating over hill and dale.

Each has his separate new deal.
Each church its individual spiel.
Grabbing members from each other
putting brother against brother.
I'd like to pinch them all and hear them squeal.

So, whatever faith that you may choose
You've simply got to hand it to the Jews
If they must, they're in there fighting
But they are not proselytizing
Which, religiously, is odd but not bad news.

Evangelists can rant and rave and boast
About how well they know the Holy Ghost
So they preach without abate
While the ushers fill the plate
Getting sinners to swell the heavenly host.
